The Being an Effective Manager Programme is delivered in three cohorts (Cohort Q1, Q2, and Q4), each consisting of three sessions spread approximately one month apart. This programme explores key management and leadership concepts, helping you understand their differences and apply them effectively in the workplace.

You will learn how to effectively manage yourself, your team, conflicting priorities and demands. You will further develop your coaching, motivation, and influencing skills in a way that positively challenges, supports, and empowers your team, while also learning how to practically manage difficult conversations and discuss challenging issues.

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognise differences between management and leadership and why skills in both are necessary.
  • Develop effective time management skills, including delegating effectively.
  • Describe fundamental approaches in best practice to delivering a quality service.
  • Develop techniques to enhance self-awareness of your management style and individual personality traits.
  • Recognise preferences when communicating with others, develop skills in influencing and motivating others, especially those different to you.
  • Explore coaching as an activity to develop, challenge, support and empower team members.
  • Enhance your influencing, motivation, and communication skills to positively challenge, support, and empower your team.
  • Learn the art of managing difficult conversations and discussing challenging issues constructively with peers, direct reports, and senior leadership.

    Jane has led this course since its 2020 launch, drawing on over 30 years of clinical and managerial oncology experience. A semi-retired registered nurse, she specializes in leadership development, coaching, and facilitation. She previously held senior leadership roles at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, including Deputy Director of Nursing and Quality. Her qualifications include RGN, BSc Nursing, Oncology Nursing Certificate, MBTI Certified Practitioner, and Executive Coach.

With over two decades working in the field of education, Jo is a seasoned teaching professional committed to making learning impactful.
